Aregbesola Threatens To Expel Students Wearing Choir Robes and sutana To Schools

The Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Tuesday said students who wore unauthorised cloths to any public schools in the State would be expelled henceforth.

Aregbesola stated this at the commissioning of St Micheal’s Government Middle School, Ibokun while reacting to different choir robes and garments wore to Baptist High School in Iwo by some Christian students.

He said it was wrong and criminal for a section or group of people to have directed some innocent students to wear choir robes to schools against court’s judgment.
He urged whoever was not satisfied with the judgment to ventilate the grievance through legitimate means rather than trying to cause crises by resorting to self help.
According to him,“Government is not interested in any religion as being speculated. My goal is to improve education standard in the state.’’

Deputy Governor Titilaoye Tomori, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, said the inauguration of the school had confirmed their mission statement in education.
Tomori said no fewer than 20 elementary, 22 middle and 17 high schools had either been commissioned or were at final stages of commissioning.

State Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Felix Awofisayo urged people to pay tax so that government can do more.
Some students of Iwo Baptist High School wore church garments and robes to school on Tuesday in reaction to the court ruling allowing Muslim female students to wear veils (hijab) to schools.

No Light, No lectures: UNEC Students Damage Cars, Buildings During Protest

Students of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, went on a rampage on Tuesday, damaging cars, buildings and other properties on campus due to poor power supply at the institution.

Lectures have been suspended in the university since June 6 after the Student Union Government declared that students would no longer attend classes until the school authorities resolve the power supply challenges.

The students, who locked up the lecture halls, held rallies to protest against the situation on Monday but the situation degenerated in the night, giving way to violence
.

It was learnt that there is hardly any power supply from the national grid in the hostels, while the generators provided by the school management currently supply power for just two hours each day.

When our correspondent visited the school on Tuesday, policemen were seen at strategic locations on the campus.

There was extensive damage to buildings in different parts of the campus – particularly the main hall and library.

Glass windows in the buildings were smashed, while some of the doors were forced open. The security office was also vandalised.

The female hostels and staff quarters were also affected with some some street lights and other infrastructure on campus also damaged by the rampaging students.

Our correspondent observed that the students, many of who wore masks, also vandalised some vehicles in the process.

The Public Relations Officer, UNEC, Mr. Gabriel Onah, informed our correspondent that about 12 vehicles belonging to the school were damaged.

No arrest has been recorded as of the time our correspondent visited the campus.

Officials of the SUG declined to comment on the incident, but some students, who did not wish to be named, explained that the management of the school refused to listen to their complaints.

Russia given ‘suspended’ ban from Euro 2016

Uefa on Tuesday ordered the “suspended disqualification” of Russia from the European Championship declaring they will be ordered out if there is more crowd trouble in a stadium at the tournament.

Russia were also fined €150,000 (N46M) over unrest in the stadium when Russia played England in Marseille on Saturday. Russia were found guilty by Europe’s governing body of crowd disturbances, racist chanting and throwing fireworks.

“This disqualification is suspended until the end of the tournament,” said the Uefa disciplinary commission decision.

“Such suspension will be lifted if incidents of a similar nature [crowd disturbances] happen inside the stadium at any of the remaining matches of the Russian team during the tournament,” it added.

Uefa stressed that its order only applied to trouble inside stadiums where the governing body is responsible for security.

Russia are playing Slovakia in Lille on Wednesday, sparking fears its fans will come into contact with English fans whose team is playing Wales in nearby Lens on Thursday.

After the 1-1 draw in Marseille, Russian fans crossed security barriers inside the Stade Velodrome and attacked England fans. Dozens of English supporters, including women and children, had to flee across security barriers to escape.

Uefa had already warned Russia and England that it could disqualify them if there was more trouble. But only Russia was charged over the conduct of its fans.
